Altavista, 2017

Altavista is a video performance that reflects on the historical practice of washing clothes by hand along the banks of rivers, once a common tradition in the Aburrá Valley. Set in the polluted Altavista stream in Medellín, the performance reenacts this act using a protective suit, symbolizing the detachment from nature caused by urbanization and contamination. The Altavista stream, now a heavily polluted waterway, holds a long history of environmental degradation and violence, both from industrial waste and social conflict.

Through the juxtaposition of the artist’s isolated action and the stream's toxic environment, Altavista highlights the loss of public connection to natural spaces that were once communal gathering points. This paradoxical act draws attention to the privilege of those who no longer rely on the rivers and challenges the viewer to reconsider the environmental and cultural impact of urban development. The performance not only critiques the ongoing environmental crisis but also serves as a metaphor for the socio-political history embedded in Medellín’s waterways.
